About the Item

A small but powerful Japanese white oni hagi yaki chawan (teabowl) by renowned contemporary master potter Seigan Yamane (b. 1952), circa 2010, Japan. The small tea bowl of typical tea cup shape, with high, straight walls, and a short, recessed foot. The rough reddish clay a stark contrast to the thick, pillowy white glaze. The white glaze beautifully thick, unctuous, and drippy. The glaze has contracted beautifully, allowing the stoneware body to peek through. The white glaze further enhanced with streaks of a bright blood red. The red overglaze expertly executed to seem as if the clay body is weeping. The exterior fully glazed on one size, partially glazed on the other. The interior fully glazed. Measurements of the tomobako: H: 3.75" W; 4" D: 4" Measurements of tea bowl only: H: 2.5" D: 2.75" The artist's mark to the interior of the foot. Also with the original signed and inscribed storage box, tomobako. Seigan Yamane (b. 1952), is a celebrated modern Japanese potter who works in hagi yaki. His tea bowls are prized amongst chawan collectors and tea aficionados. Oni hagi yaki is a new style of Hagi Ware created in the 1980's by Miwa Jusetsu (Kyusetsu XI). It is characterized by the rough, sand filled clay body and thick white glaze, often with contrasting underglaze.
