Small Korean White Glazed Porcelain Moon Jar, Joseon Dynasty, 18th/19th Century

About the Item

A subtle and sublime small Korean white glazed porcelain moon jar, Joseon Dynasty, 18th/19th century, Korea. The small moon jar of typical form, with a slightly irregular globular body set upon a short ring foot. The high sloped shoulders support a short neck and rolled rimmed mouth. The entirely covered in a cool grayish white glaze, with areas of blushy pink, and pooling to celadon in some recessed areas. The body with a single, uneven deeply circumscribed line. The neck with a series of short diagonal inscribed lines. The overall effect is an object seemingly precariously balanced against its own weight, with a glaze that seems to both reflect and absorb light. Moon jars have an almost mythic status in both Korea and the west. So called because of both their shape and luminous glaze, moon jars have a character all their own. Their uniqueness stems partially from their construction. Moon jars are always constructed as two hemispherical bowls, then joined in the center. Because of this, they can sometimes look lopsided or unbalanced, which is part of their appeal.
