Finely Lacquered Chinese Chest, c. 1850

About the Item

This stunning, ornate chest was masterfully constructed over 150 years by artisans in northern China. Although the design follows classic forms, vibrant decoration makes this chest unique. The paneled doors are cloaked in a brilliant red lacquer, painstakingly applied layer by layer to achieve a glossy sheen. The lacquer was then densely patterned with butterflies, tight meanders, and abstract phoenixes and dragons soaring around shou longevity symbols. Punctuated by delicate brass hardware, the beautifully aged cabinet imbues its surroundings with color, rich texture, and storied history.
