Since traditional 19th century Chinese homes were built without closets, this red lacquer chest would have been used for general storage. The centre of each apron is carved with the symbol for longevity amidst trailing vines. The red lacquer finish was originally brushed by hand layer upon layer to achieve a deep mellow luster that has aged beautifully over time.
