Fine Chinese Lacquered Food Storage Box of Impressive Size

About the Item

This large and impressive Mandarin food storage box is very detailed and well-constructed. The case, made of finely carved wood, houses five different stackable storage boxes. Each box is fronted on two sides with recessed carved panels that are lacquered and gilded. The case uprights on two sides are large panels of deeply carved and lacquered and gilded panels within shaped panels. The lacquered areas are done in black tan and red and are then heavily gilded to bring out details and shapes making the whole sculptural and decorative. The piece is moved by a cast bronze dragon handle.
