Japanese Carved and Lacquered Shibayama Cabinet, Meiji Period
About the Item
An elaborate and finely detailed carved wood, and gold lacquered Shibayama cabinet (Chigaidansu). Having beautifully applied semi-precious stone and mother of pearl decoration of flowers and birds on gold lacquer ground on the door fronts, and painted and inlay design on the inner cabinet doors.
Japan, late 19th century-early 20th century.
Reputedly made for Alice Roosevelt Longworth as a wedding present (daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt). Although she cancelled her wedding the family kept the cabinet and it was part of their estate until we acquired it.
