Large Japanese Marquetry Table Cabinet, Meiji Period, Late 19th Century, Japan

$4,800

About

A fine and unusually large Japanese table cabinet or jewelry chest with yosegi marquetry work and lacquer paneled doors, Meiji period, late 19th century, Japan. The oversized table cabinet of irregular octagon shape, with a lift top featuring a black lacquered compartmentalized section over two drawers. Two large doors open to reveal a series of six drawers. An additional three drawers below complete the chest. The two doors inset with maki-e decorated lacquer panels. One door depicting rushing water among pine trees and rocky outcrops. The other door with a dynamic scene of an eagle attacking a monkey under pine trees. The pine is a symbol of strength, endurance, and longevity. The image of the eagle attacking a monkey is a symbol of overpowering strength. The imposing cabinet with amazing marquetry work of various precious woods, a technique known as yosegi in Japanese. The skilled artisan has used contrasting woods to created geometric and figural patterns throughout the cabinet, including a bat and a stylized longevity character. The fittings all of white brass, embossed with a delightful scrolling vegetal and floral design. The sides and back of the cabinet in black lacquer with golden spots of maki-e.
