Chinese Ming Dynasty Style Elm Wedding Chair with Curving Back and Carved Splat

About the Item

A Chinese Ming Dynasty style elmwood wedding chair from the early 20th century, with carved panels on the splat, curved arms, and gooseneck front posts. Born in China during the early years of the 20th century, this antique elm wedding chair features a curving back, adorned with a splat carved in low-relief with panels presenting mystical animals, the lower one being pierced. The chair is flanked with curving open arms wit gooseneck post resting on a planked wooden seat. Created for the bride to be lead to meet her future husband, this armchair is raised on four straight legs with arch-shaped apron, the ensemble being strengthened by side stretchers. With its charming Silhouette and lovely elm patina, this Chinese Ming style armchair will be a great decorative accent for any home, perhaps placed in a foyer, living room or office.

Prior to the 10th century, Chinese society eschewed raised seats in favour of mats. The rising popularity of chairs and other forms of elevated seating led craftsmen to adapt traditional cabinetry and architecture techniques to the human body. In the case of this Yuanyi, or round chair, the flowing crest rail is a direct descendant of the simple armrests that had traditionally supported individuals on mats in their homes. This homage to an ancestral form, combined with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery techniques, created an elegant, functional chair that has endured for centuries and inspired many contemporary furniture designers...
