Taisho Japanese Miniature Tansu, Haribako, Presentation Box This Japanese box, made in the Asakusa district of Tokoyo in the Okada Sunshodo, was created circa 1920s. It is marked by quality craftsmanship and made of a highly figured mulberry wood. Although these pieces are widely recognized as sewing boxes this particular box was possibly used for Japanese military related merit badges (according to the purple stamp inside the bottom drawer). The front features a five-drawer configuration in the most wonderful grain. The top opens under a doubled hinged lid to expose a long divided top compartment. This box is stamped in the bottom drawer directly indicating time, place, workshop and purpose of manufacture. Condition is good. Wear due to age and use includes surface wear. A circular stain to top. As is typical, the ruler is missing. Measurements: W 12.75” x D 7.5” x H 10”
