Chinese Export Black Lacquer Gilt Painted Box, Mid 20th Century, China

About the Item

A large and highly decorative Chinese black lacquered wooden box with gilt painted decoration, mid 20th century, China. The large box of square quatrefoil form, may originally have been used as a gift box, and filled with food, silks, or other gifts. The lid of the box painted in the shanshui style, with an idyllic river and mountain landscape. Brush and trees adorn the rocky peaks, overlooking a pair of fishing boats and fishermen below. A border of butterflies and melons surrounds the main image. The high sides painted with stylized scrolling lotus blossoms and foliage. The interior painted plain black.
