Pair of Two Japanese Antique Maki-e Lacquer Round Trays, Meiji period

About the Item

Japanese lacquer tray with the wild goose, reed, and wave design. This pair of tray is a fine example of multiple lacquer techniques using gold, hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, and togidashi. Wave and reed feature are expressed with the technique of togidashi: Sowing lacquer powder after the same process as maki-e, lacquer is applied to the entire surface, and after curing, the pictures and patterns are sharpened to create a lacquer work with a dim and gentle impression. Wild goose feature is expressed with the tachnique of takamakie: A technique to make pictures and patterns look three-dimensional by raising them high. Apply lacquer base to the part that you want to look three-dimensional, and dry it before drawing a flat lacquer work. This technique requires advanced technique of maki-e. Comes with original tomobako tomobako size: H8cm W45cm D30cm / H3.14in W17.7in D11.8in.
