Antique Japanese Cloisonne Totai Covered Enamel Porcelain Jar
About the Item
A Japanese covered Totai enamel on porcelain ginger jar. The ware is enameled with polychrome medallions representing blossoming flowers surrounded by floral, foliage and geometrical ornaments made in the Cloisonne technique. The cover of the ware is made in the same design. Totai Shippo is the name given to Japanese cloisonne on ceramics, both on earthenwares and on porcelain. It has a similar appearance to metallic cloisonne ware, with metal cloisons sometimes individually filled with different colours however, some parts of the surface might be left decorated as normal blue and white porcelain, as is done on the inside of the lid of this item.
