Cast Iron Temple Bell Holding Bracket from Burma, Late 19th-Early 20th Century
Cast iron temple bell holding bracket from Burma, late 19th-early 20th century. Cast iron bracket from Burma used to hold a bronze temple bell, late 19th-early 20th century. The gifting of a cast bronze bell and its attendant cast iron bracket was and is an act of great merit in Southeast Asian Buddhist culture. The casting would include propitious symbols and figures relevant to the occasion, and suitable to the station of the giver. In this case the bracket has guardian lions and attendants with mounted aristocratic figures on top. The remains of metal wire, utilized in the casting process, are visible weaving through the different elements. A natural rust patina covers the entire piece. The bracket is mounted on a steel plate; the rod supporting the holder mimics the way in which the rod supporting the bronze bell would have been set in the bracket.
