$2,800

About

A charming Japanese bronze incense burner in the form a goose or duck, Edo period, mid-19th century. The well cast fowl stands to two webbed feet, its long neck outstretched, head held aloft, and wide bill open. The folded wings and tail decorated in the champleve technique, featuring enamels of blue, red, yellow and white. The body of the bird displaying a beautiful natural and lacquer patina of mottled deep moss green and chocolate brown to near black. The body is hollow, and would originally have been filled with sand to hold incense. Pewter weights have been added to balance the censer when empty.
