About
This deeply cast Japanese bronze planter was made in the Meiji period, a time in Japan when the natural order of life was upset by the disbanding of the traditional samurai class. Skills used to create objects for this class were turned to domestic and export wears designed to keep Japan's artistic traditions alive and flowering. This planter is typical of such works. The natural life-like casting of bamboo with tigers is deeply cast and finely worked. The handles are fully realized chrysanthemums while the legs are elephant heads using their trunks as feet. The patina is a nice old color with some rub thru to the surface. While this piece has no mark it is the product of a master and is of good scale making it a desirable decorative object
