- Merletto Glass Vase with Ground Lip, style of Harrachov CzechBy Harrach GlassworksLocated in Melbourne, AUThis may not be a vase by the Czech company Harrach, hence listed ‘in the style of’. Nevertheless, it has a strong central European 1950s aesthetic. We love to connect the objects we find to the social movements of their time. This vase was made in the 1950s - the atomic age. You can see the inclination towards science - experimental materials and technology, accuracy and super fine detail in the 'Merlatto' (lace) glass treatment of this vase. The Merletto pattern inside the glass is unlike the triple-threaded Czech version. It looks more like the earlier Seguso Merletto...Category

- Monumental Signed Shunichi Inoue White and Rose Ash Glazed Vase 1978By Shunichi InoueLocated in Melbourne, AUA wonderful example of the work of master Japanese potter, Shunichi Inoue. This vessel dates from his Australian residency. We love the potency of this very simple form - it has a powerful presence, connoting stillness, composure. For some reason it makes me think of the moon. It has the same still, calm, abiding presence. Shunichi Inoue studied ceramics at Kyoto City University of Arts 1969-75. He travelled to Australia to lecturer in ceramics at the Bendigo College of Advanced Education in Victoria, Australia where he stayed for three years. He returned to Australia in late 1984 as a visiting professor and again in 1993, when he made an extended stay. He was an active exhibitor and had an important influence on Australian pottery...Category

- Antique Japanese Mixed Metals Copper & Silver Usubata Ikebana Flower VaseLocated in Philadelphia, PAA fine antique Japanese flower vase. In hand-hammered copper (or possibly a thin-bodied bronze) with applied silver bands to rim, footrim, shaped edge, and with a lotus petal border at the joint of neck and body. Having the usubata form with a wide flared neck and mouth. The 'usubata' vase is a form favored for large scale floral arrangements by the Ikenobo school, the oldest and largest school of Japanese ikebana founded in the 15th century by Buddhist monk Senno Ikenobo. It is believed that the wide and shallow rim of an usubata vase which displays the surface of the water best imitates natural conditions of growth while also contributing to the longevity of an arrangement with the increased surface area of the water better oxygenating the plants. The base retains still retains hand-hammered marks. There is evidence of seams and folds throughout from the construction, and the surface has a cloud-like brown patina throughout. Simply a wonderful Japanese mixed metal vase...Category
