Large Japanese Meiji Period Cast Bronze Censer with Dragon and Shishi

About

A large and attractive Japanese bronze incense burner, Meiji period, late 19th or early 20th century. The bulbous body of the censer supported by a large pedestal foot and set upon an integral stand. The bowl of the censer is decorated with a delightful scene of birds and flowers under floral lapettes. A pair of handles shaped as shish (guardian lions), grace the sides. A fierce dragon coils around the pedestal column, sheltered by lotus petals. The integral Stand cast as a classical circular incense stand supported by cabriole legs with lion heads. The bronze with a lovely chocolate brown patina.
