Dong Son Culture Ritual Bronze Drum, 4th-3rd Century BC, Vietnam

About the Item

A well cast and intricately decorated bronze drum from the Dong Son culture, circa 4th - 3rd century BC, Red River Delta, Vietnam. The face of the drum features a central 8 pointed star surrounded by bands of alternating geometric designs. A single band of waterbirds in flight represents the key motif. The body of the drum features four lug handles, and is further decorated by simple bands of geometric designs. Another band of linear design running vertically along the body may be interpreted as feathers, further highlighting the waterbird motif on the tympanum. This drum can be classified as a Heger Type I, subgroup B. The Dong Son culture was the first bronze age culture in Southeast Asia. Renowned for their advanced metalworking techniques, their influence can be seen from Southern China down through the Indonesian archipelago. Metallurgical analysis performed by Ciram Laboratories, France.
