18thC Tibetan Buddha or Bodhisattva. Rare and Fine - 9460

About the Item

Rare type 18thC Tibetan Buddha or Bodhisattva. 5.25" tall not including its custom base.  Very distinctive sculpting style in the way the crown and robes are deliberately displayed asymmetrically. this bronze may be from a small Kingdom or autonomous region that had its own special way of creating their bronze sculpture that was unique to their own small area. what I do know is that I've never seen another quite like it. Exceptionally crisp casting and finishing. Very high quality overall. The condition is also exceptional, with a beautiful patina.  9460.

A large antique Tibetan Buddha shrine or prayer box (also known as Gau) which encases a painted terracotta Buddha figure, all wrapped in a hand embroidered quilted silk brocade. This was used as traveling shrine and carried on one's person when away from home. Beginning with the “om” written on the left hand side of this traveling shrine, an itinerant Tibetan monk once traced his fingers clockwise over the embossed characters. As he did this, he recited "om ma ni padh mey hum," the universal Tibetan Buddhist prayer for the well-being of all sentient beings. Known as a Gau, this portable shrine...
