19th Century Buddhist Prayer Box
About the Item
19th century Buddhist prayer box. A Thai Buddhist manuscript box of the 19th century or earlier. This type of box was used to to store Buddhist texts, known as Buddhavacana, Sutras, and Shastras, and or "The Tripitaka" teachings canonical texts. These manuscripts where written on Palm Leaf's which where shaped into long rectangle sheets of palm paper. This particular box is beautifully decorated in Lai Rot Nam a style of Thai gold leaf painting as done in the Ayutthaya period. The box has six images of Buddha seated in Dharmachakra Mudra (Teaching mudra) surrounded by flowers. Some details to the decoration remain, fragments of mirrored colored glass separating the painted scenes. Having a stepped base with Naga carvings holding up the box. This is a real treasure for display or use. The box is in good structural condition, with much wear to the exterior exhibiting age an use. Construction is hand hued wood with wooden pegs with thayo and lacquer covering. Thai 18th - 19th century. A very special box with centuries of goodness shared.
