Antique Porcelain Double Gourd Vase, Japan Edo Period

About the Item

This porcelain double gourd vase is a wonderful decorative object realized by a Japanese artist during the Edo period in the early 19th century. Painted with polychrome enamels, it shows on the body a bottom with alveoli on which Stand circular reserves decorated with real and fantastic animals seems to reproduce the zodiac signs. Furthermore, the original blanket is decorated with small sloping triangles and three bands with geometric and floral decorations. At the center of the base "Kutani Fuku" the relief mark. Provenance: Sotheby's Auction, Olympia London, April 23, 2002, lot 254; Private collection, Milan. Certainly, it is a sophisticated piece, with a singular Silhouette, a vase of good luck to propitiate a good year! A nice present for the new year Kutani The Japanese word "Kutani" means "Nine Valleys" and points to the area or the village where this wonderful king of Japanese porcelain was produced. Since Kutani is a place, almost all pieces marked Kutani were decorated there, after Kutani become the name of a precise Japanese style. "Porcelain decorators familiar with the Kutani style could also move around. Many Kutani made pieces might also have just the artist's as a mark, and no location at all, leading us to also needing to look at style as a clue to the origin of a piece". This object is shipped from Italy. Under existing legislation, any object in Italy created over 70 years ago by an artist, designer or craftsman who has died requires a license for export regardless of the work’s market price.
