18th Century Japanese Battle Screen

About

A spectacular six-panel screen, 18th century, depicting samurai warriors from the Tairo and Minamoto clans, who fought for control of Japan in the 12th century. This is a scene from the Gempei War tales and shows warriors in boats and on horseback, about to clash at the Uji River. The detail is wonderful and the colors are vibrant. The painting is surrounded by fabric brocade borders and a black lacquer frame accented by metal mounts. There is traditional printed backing paper on the reverse. This screen was purchased in 1981 in Kyoto, at S. Yanagi.
