Chinese Late 18th Century Reverse Painting on Glass in its Original Frame

About the Item

This large reverse painting on glass from China circa 1780 to 1790 depicts a dramatic battle scene of numerous horsemen and infantry charging in a very hilly estate's grounds among buildings trees and a garden-like park. All participants and horses are elaborately dressed and armored. The sky and landscape are suitable exciting and rendered with great detail as are the architectural components. Elements are also enhanced with gold and silvered details throughout the painting. It is rather rare to see such a scene painted on glass and from this period. Most are of court life, delicate beauties in lush environments or specific people or places known especially to westerners as we loved to buy these as import goods. The condition is not perfect as the glass has been cracked. This often happens as Chinese glass panels of this size are almost never flat and have warped spots creating uneven tension in a frame. This piece as been put under another section of new glass to protect it and giving it a clear generally unbroken surface and has lost no parts or painted elements. The frame is original and has been maintained for integrity with a new backing to again protect the old painting front and back.

  • Chinese Reverse Glass Painting of Taoist Immortals, c. 1900
    Located in Chicago, IL
Popularized during the Qing dynasty, reverse glass painting requires an artist to essentially work backwards, starting with details and shading before adding color and form. Lending the finished work a subtle three-dimensional effect, this exacting technique doesn't allow for any corrections, and is only revealed to its full effect when the glass pane is turned around. This example dates to the late 19th century and depicts the Taoist immortals He Xiangu and Cao Guojiu. Said to have attained immortality through their studies of the natural world, the Eight Immortals each represent a different condition in life and impart blessings of prosperity and longevity. The charming scene is likely one of a set of...
