These lovely large-scale figures are dressed in richly patterned blue cloisonne vests and hold a peach in yellow cloisonne enamels, circa 1920-1930. The bodies of the monkeys are repousse copper with many fine details worked from the inside and outside of the form making them charming and very expressive. This urn, while archaistic in shape, generally is far more typical of 18th and 19th century specialty carved hardstone vases. The carving in rich veined amethyst quartz was done circa 1930-1940 and is dominated on the lid with a Kylin or mythical beast that in Chinese culture represents good luck and prosperity. The lid its self is ribbed and rests on the top of the urn between two further Kylin heads holding in there mouth loose rings. The main body of the vase is covered in Taotie masks in a stylized form. This fine vintage painted work is richly filled with small figures surrounding a large central figure. All interspersed with clouds and religious symbols. The colors are deep but muted with time and age. The piece is newly bordered in rich Chinese silks edges in three strong colors setting the piece of nicely and making a strong impression.
