Japanese Big Red Jubako End Table Signed and Hand Painted, Early 20th Century

From our recent Japanese acquisitions travels, 90+ years old This Japanese brilliant and decorative antique from the early 20th century is hand carved and hand painted with red lacquer on a sturdy heavy wood jubako frame. It would make a superb eye-catching end table or decorative accessory. Inside boasts four serving and unique entertainment trays! It possesses excellent detail and original color. Photographed in natural day light. History: This is a traditional Japanese stacking lacquered box used for food presentation and storage. Jubako are most often used during new year’s celebrations to store and serve traditional Japanese foods, -manju- called osechi ryori. The tradition started in the Heian Period. Manju was derived from a type of mochi or pounded rice cake, that has existed in China for a long time it was originally called Mantou in Chinese, but became known as manju when it came to Japan. In 1341, a Japanese envoy that came back from China brought back mantou with him and started to sell it as nara-manju. It is said that this was the origin of Japanese manju. However this is no ordinary jubako- a rare surviving large scale signed red lacquer form that is hard to find. Dimensions: Entire stack: 39 inches high and 15.5 inches wide Good displayable size.
