About

1963 Woodblock print "The Rule" by Hodaka Yoshida, Japan. Hodaka Yoshida, Japanese 1926-1995 The Rule, 1963 Woodblock print Frame size: 36 inches (91.5 cm) x 26.25 inches (66.7 cm) Paper size: 32 inches (81.2 cm) x 23 inches (58.4 cm) Signed: in pencil lower right, Hodaka Yoshida Titled: in Kanji and English, written in pencil at lower left Edition: 11/50 Condition: Very good. Not examined out of frame, but entire sheet is visible on the floating mat. This print is from a period of Hodaka Yoshida's life, from 1955 to 1963, when he created the so-called "primitive energy prints". These works were strongly influenced by his travels to the Yucatan and his experiments with making monoprints using small shapes printed freehand on a single sheet. The Rule was created as an edition of 50, using traditional woodblock printing techniques, but the lively expressionism of those earlier collage-like monoprints remains. Titled in kanji and English lower left, with 11/50 at the center, and signed Hodaka Yoshida '63 lower right, all in graphite.
