Black and White Limited Edition Sketches by John Brevard

About the Item

These black and white limited edition sketches by John Brevard were created in 2006 after the artist experienced a near death experience. He often sites this series of sketches as his first comprehensive series. This series were all sold in the early 2000s and this series were the only ones left available in the series. Each printed sketch is purchased separately and exists within a series of 20 which are all signed, dated and numbered. Please choose the piece you would like and we will prepare for shipment. All pieces arrive in an art tube and are unframed. Black and white Non-Duality Series “The Death of the False Self” There are developmental stages of awareness beyond the adult self which involve the perception of connectedness with phenomenon normally considered outside the boundaries of personal identity. The (black and white series) was created to illustrate the deconstruction of the artists personality as he processed several deeply transformational, transpersonal states of consciousness via a near death experience. Nonduality Series Theory: The way that we perceive the world is a function of our state of consciousness; such structures unfold in a developmental sequence, from complete unconsciousness at one end of the spectrum, through the various levels of egoism, existentialism and transpersonalism, all the way to complete consciousness or enlightenment at the other end of the spectrum. This applies to all scales of development, from the maturation of an individual organism to the evolution of a species as a whole. Through the early development of our species humans were embedded in nature and lived off of the land, much like other animals. In this Primitive, pre-personal fusion state there was no distinction between self and environment; we were instinctually absorbed in a dreamy immersion and oneness with the biosphere. As we evolved self-consciousness, humans began to set themselves apart from the world and reflect upon, conceptualize, and analyze their experience. In time, we became less and less alive to the ever-present ground state of being until finally, the separated “ego” no longer identified with the rest of creation and experienced only “other”. This disassociation of humanity with the natural world is the underlying cause of our current environmental crisis. Our culture at present seeks a higher integration, which lies beyond the man versus nature dualism. Individual and collective perception is progressively shifting and a new baseline structure of consciousness is emerging; it is characterized by the realization of a unitive, transcendent state of being in which the distance between man and nature, self and other, becomes transparent. In such a state the subject moves into expressive unity with the world, simultaneously retaining self-consciousness and autonomy, while uniting in a communion with the larger whole. This is exactly what Brevard intends to communicate through these works work. Inspired by a deep ecological awareness and transpersonal experiences beyond the realm of ordinary consciousness, he use design to depict his own stage of self-understanding and to point the way to an integrated new world.

Prolific jewelry designer John Brevard said it was a near-fatal childhood illness that led him to question the nature of human existence and its connection with the universe. Art and design would come to serve as an outlet for his self-expression, and Brevard’s visually engaging, cerebral and environmentally sustainable statement pieces embody the essence of 21st-century modernism.

Born in 1982 in Miami, Florida, Brevard had an intrinsic interest in nature and the arts as a child. However, at age 14, he contracted encephalitis and meningitis, leaving him comatose for several weeks. His recovery left him with a deep-seated desire to explore broad philosophical questions about human existence.

“There’s nothing more inspiring than the universe,” Brevard told Haute Living in 2014. “I’m influenced by realms of existence beyond our five physical senses ... alternate dimensions beyond our normal waking state consciousness.”

The experience, Brevard claimed, “served as the catalyst for his design philosophy and work ethic,” and he pursued a career in the arts, graduating with degrees in architecture and design.

In 2007, Brevard established his namesake brand. Its offerings included jewelry, accessories, handbags, shoes, furniture, art and more. He opened his first pop-up showroom in 2010 in Wynwood — an arts and culture district in Miami — where he displayed his visual art, which was listed in the Miami New Times’ “Best of Miami.”

Brevard launched his first luxury jewelry line in 2012 with fashion rings, pendant necklaces and cuff bracelets made of gold and silver, and embellished with precious stones. He opened his first permanent atelier and appointment-only showroom in Coral Gables the following year.

In 2015, Brevard opened his first flagship store in New York City and gained membership to the Council of Fashion Designers of America. He also launched Thoscene — a unique customization software that uses an astrological algorithm to create jewelry and accessories based on the time, date and location of a person’s birth.

Today, Brevard’s jewelry and other works can be found in galleries and retailers worldwide and have been featured in magazines such as Vogue, Forbes and Vanity Fair.
