Japanese Woodblock Print " Three Geishas" Kikukawa Eizan (菊川英山) #2

About the Item

Original woodblock work by " Three Geishas" Kikukawa Eizan (????) 1787-1867, depicting the traditional Japanese ladies with the traditional beautiful custom to express the charm of Japanese culture, framed and signed. Dimension: Image 10" x 14.5": with frame 19" x 23.5", Professional Framing with highly skillful worker and material. Artist: Kikukawa Eizan (????) 1787-1867 A native of Edo, Eizan Kikugawa was born as Toshinobu Omiya in 1787. He began his artistic career studying with his father Eiji Kikugawa, a Kano painter and fan maker, before pursuing printmaking under Hokusai’s pupil Hokkei. From the start of the 19th century to his retirement, Eizan was leading artist of bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) and shunga (erotic prints). He is considered the founder of the Kikugawa style. After 1830, he worked almost exclusively as a painter until his death in 1867. Eizan admired and followed in the footsteps of Utamaro, despite the fact that he never trained with him. Working primarily in the genre of bijin-ga, Eizan captures beautiful women with sensibility and lyricism, imbuing them with elegance and graceful classicality. Though the increased demand for ukiyo-e during the early 19th century caused some artists to rush their designs, Eizan resisted this pressure, maintaining impeccable design skills throughout his career.

  • Kaoru Kawano Signed Large Japanese Woodblock Print Dancing Geisha Figure Eshima
    By Kaoru Kawano
    Located in Studio City, CA
A beautiful work by famed Japanese artist Kaoru Kawano who was known for his whimsical portrayals of women, children, and animals. Stylistically, he was one of the first Japanese artists to combine Western-style elements with the traditional methods of woodblock printmaking. This work is known as "Dancing Figure (Eshima)" The print is signed (in white ink within the image) and sealed (in red) by Kawano. This work is a quite rare self-printed lifetime double dai Oban large-size print. The quality and colors are striking. It is likely from a limited edition and perhaps numbered on the lower margin (we can not verify as it was previously framed but we are confident that this is the case). A very beautiful and rich image. Would make for a great addition to any Japanese art and print collection or Stand-out accent work in about any setting. Frame dimensions: 30.5" high, 20.5" wide, .5" deep Viewable art...
