19th Century Chinese Black Lacquer and Gilt Brush Pot

About

This black lacquered brush pot, which was an essential fixture of a scholar's studio, is hand painted with alternating depictions of garden scenes and flower motifs. These ornate gilt paintings have mellowed beautifully, revealing a depth of character that only time can achieve. This brush pot once held a collection of brushes for use in calligraphy and painting. Placed beside his inkpot and insktone, this 19th century brush pot once held select calligraphy brushes in a scholar’s studio. Carefully selected as a source of beauty and creative inspiration, the black lacquered brush pot was not simply a decorative object but a work of art. Ornate gilt paintings adorn each side of the vessel with alternating scenes of blossoming flowers and scholars strolling through a garden. The lacquered finish of this beautiful brush pot has gained a rich character, imbued with the texture of time from its centuries of use.
