19th Century Nephrite Jade Carved Plaque on Stand

About the Item

This carved Nephrite Jade plaque of a mythical best has the attributes of a dragon and a fish leaping from the water. Carved we believe in the late 18th or early 19th century to be used as an inset for a piece of furniture or for a screen, the piece has been placed on a wood frame and hung from a loop within a hardwood Chinese carved openwork stand. The stand appears to be later but still within the 19th century showing the Chinese veneration for the past and a natural love of the culture's historical accomplishments. The stand is carved in an openwork pattern of vines and flowers and has loose balls painted to simulate jade beads at the bottom. The carving on the plaque and carved wooden waves from which it issues are fine and far more accomplished then the stand indicating a slightly different origin for the parts, but both show a deep old patina and age and have been together for a long time.
