17th or 18th Century Burmese Shan Style Alabaster Sculpture of a Seated Buddha

An alabaster 17th or 18th century Burmese Shan style seated Buddha with traces of polychromy. This 17th-18th century seated Buddha was carved in the Shan style from alabaster in Myanmar, a Burmese region. The Buddha is seated in the attitude of “calling the earth to witness”, his right hand delicately brushing the ground. This scene occurs during a long meditation which is enhanced by the serene face of the Buddha, with half-closed eyes and a soft smile. The Buddha is wearing a typical Burmese sharp headgear and monastic clothes as described in the Buddhist texts. Substantial traces of the original gold polychromy highlight the luminous aspect of alabaster. The Stand is nicely carved with lotus petals, the Buddhist symbol of purity. Thanks to its meditative aspect, this exquisite 17th-18th century Burmese Shan style alabaster seated Buddha will be an excellent decorative choice for any room, particularly in a foyer, office, living room or bedroom, sharing its serenity with us.
