19th Century Indian Bronze Head of Gauri

About

Coming from the state of Maharashtra, this delicate bronze hollow head represents goddess Gauri, the consort of Shiva and a symbol of love, fertility and devotion. With almond shaped eyes, the face shows a placid expression. The goddess is wearing elegant earrings and her hair, chiseled in detail, is braided with fine ornaments. Castings of superb quality, though few in number, attest to the artistically and technical skills of the native image-maker.The metal Castings were made in various parts of India around the same time, indicative of a widespread skill, with pieces, which can be dated back to the Indus valley civilization (2500-1500B.C.E.) and probably earlier.
