Antique Japan Spiritual Zen Chanting Drum with Striker

About

Japanese temple find from the Taisho period, early 20th century. A large hand carved hand lacquered, and hand gilded wooden chanting drum mokugyo, a fish form wooden percussion instrument and chanting gong once used in zen temples in chanting sessions. Taisho period (1912-1926). An old wooden striker is included. Dimensions: 9 inches tall and 8.5 inches wide This wooden instrument was authentically used by monks and laity involving the recitation of sutras, mantras, or other Buddhist texts. It serves to keep rhythm during sutra chanting often when chanting name Amitabha. Usage wear appropriate for its good age and genuine use. Handmade, hand carved, hand gilt, only one of this kind and with genuine old age and patina.
