Antique Japanese Meiji Period Wooden Sign with Calligraphy, 19th Century

About

This 19th century wooden sign with calligraphy was made in Japan during the Meiji period. This narrow wooden panel is lightly carved to create a frame and four calligraphic symbols. The upper section showcases remnants of a painted scene, probably a woman. The panel below features a large calligraphy enhanced by dark painted accents. This tall 19th century Japanese Meiji period wooden sign with calligraphy would be an uncommon decorative item in most homes, perhaps hung on a wall or placed leaning on a chest of drawers or console table. However, thanks to its original narrow shape, it would also be a perfect decorative object for any small room such as a hallway.
