Chinese Qing Dynasty Carved Bamboo HeHe ErXian Group, 19th Century

About

A wonderful Chinese bamboo figural carving featuring the Taoist immortal twins of eternal youth, known as the HeHe ErXian, Qing dynasty, 19th century. Finely carved from a single large section of bamboo root, the twins of mirth and harmony, often associated with marriage and the constellation Gemini, are portrayed as corpulent youths with large bellies and mischievous grins upon their faces. One twin is crouched down, slyly opening a basket, from which smoke and a bat emerge. The other stands, laughing heartily and holding a lotus blossom and large lotus leaf that shelters the both of them like an umbrella. The bamboo with a lovely honey coloration.
