Chofa Roof Finial from Burma, Carved and Eroded Teak Wood, Early 20th Century
Chofa Roof finial from Burma. Carved and eroded teak wood. Early 20th century. Mounted on a tiered stand. This beautifully eroded Chofa comes from a temple or aristocratic residence in Burma. The Chofa- literally, sky tassel - is a stylized representation of a celestial bird, sometimes interpreted as Garuda, the half man half bird steed for Vishnu, but also interpreted by others as representing a Hamsa, the celestial swan which carries Brahma. This Chofa itself is further decorated with a wonderful carving of an Apsara, a female spirit of the clouds and waters often encountered in Thai and Burmese iconography. Dimensions (piece itself): 14.5 inches wide by 12.5 inches deep by 62.5 inches tall. Dimensions (with base): 14.5 wide x 14.5 deep x 75.5 tall.
