Early 20th Century Batak Carved Wooden Tribal Door, Sumatra, Indonesia

About the Item

This rice granary door features a carved lizard and is from the Batak Tribe, from Lake Toba, central Sumatra. The lizard symbolises earth fertility amid Batak belief, responsible for fertility of the fields and harvesting. It thus makes sense to have such a figure on the door of a rice granary. This door is very old with usage patina and age-related damage which includes cracks and weathering.
