Japan Old Gold Crowned Kanon Guan Yin, Original Gold Lacquer, Signed
About
This is a lovely Japanese temple find, a gold gilt and lacquered wood Kanon Guan Yin. She is adorned with the original cut metal crown a top her head, often lost, and her hands depict the mudra of compassion. The Kanon stands tall and with right hand pointed down which symbolically signifies her opposition to evil under earthly forces.
It is signed front and back in red lacquer with posthumous Buddhist names- a feature rarely found today.
The lacquer and its meticulously carved rock out crop symbolized base is an exquisite example of the revival of traditional crafts from the early Edo period. It is covered with black lacquer and gold leaf with an intricate hemp-leaf pattern. Finally a fine perforated cut metal jewelry like crown was added- these rarely survive from great age.
We acquired it from a large Japanese collection this past year from one of our many buying trips.
Dimensions: 14 inches tall and 4 inches wide
Possibilities: It would look perfect indoors in your special tokonoma (Japanese alcove), shrine, or mediation space.
