From our recent Japanese Acquisitions Travels A rare pair Japan, a dramatic large-scale antique pair of hand carved Daruma wooden sculptures - a wonderful set of precious Talismans signifying good luck and perseverance dating to the late 19th century. In Japan, these were often carved and given as gifts for good luck. . Dimensions: largest 11" tall and 10 inches diameter; smaller 9 inches x 8 inches Quality: Hand carved, Ittobori style (each carved from one wooden piece). Handmade and hand carved Provenance: Old Southern Japan collection. History of Bodhidharma The Daruma, or Bodhidharma, was the founder of the Zen sect of Buddhism. These sculptures, though typically red and depicting a bearded man (Dharma), vary greatly in color and design depending on region and artist. Daruma is seen as a symbol of perseverance and good luck, making them a popular Japanese gift of encouragement.
