About the Item

Japanese Momoyama period rare early pair of Baku figures, carved in keyaki wood with an exquisite wood grain, 17th century, circa 1650. The elephant-like Baku is an imaginary and composite creature from Chinese mythology, thought to prevent or devour nightmares. It has the trunk and tusks of an elephant, the eyes of a rhinoceros, and the paws of a tiger. Baku figures are commonly housed within shrines, mounted at the ceiling in opposite corners. In remarkable antique condition with some losses.

The charming figure, carved from a single piece of wood is exceptionally carved showing the male figure with humorous expression holding two Rabbits one by the ears and the second under his arm. This is truly a wonderful piece with clear age and a nice patina to it. Very unique. We have not seen another quite like it. The monk appears to have glass eyes which gives his expression a very humanistic feel. The head is removable (please see the last image). From a collection of Japanese arts and artifacts. Most likely dates back to the Edo period. Would make for a nice addition to any Japanese or Asian artifacts...
