Japanese Trio Three Antique Hand Carved Wood Koi Good Fortune Fish, 19th Century

From our recent Japanese Acquisitions Travels- a big catch. Unique set of three (3) large scale fine old Japanese 19th century hand carved wooden KOI fish symbolic of prosperity, perseverance and good fortune. This biggest fish holds the round ball like "wish granting" jewel in its mouth. The largest measures 24 inches in length and the smallest 12 inches in length Complete set three all for immediate display and possessing a Fine original dark patina from appropriate age. Originally a crossbar for a hanging pot hook ensemble called jizai, these were often displayed in Japanese main living rooms for suspending cooking pots and kettles over a charcoal fire. Today these antique works of art serve as wonderful decorative sculptures as ours. Provenance: Japanese private collections, collected in the past six months. Only one set. History of KOI Many of the attributes of the Koi symbolize prosperity and success including several lessons individuals often encounter in life. The Koi fish has a powerful and energetic life force, demonstrated by its ability to swim against currents and even travel upstream. Some of the characteristics associated with the Koi include: Good fortune, success, prosperity, longevity, courage, ambition and perseverance.
