Large Vintage Japanese Bronzed Sculpture of Toba on His Mule

About the Item

Presenting a beautiful large vintage Japanese bronzed sculpture of Toba on his Mule. Some might say ‘Monumental’ .. being 34 inches tall and 30 inches wide ! LOL Probably made in the 1960’s, in Japan, in the Showa Era, this cast 2 piece sculpture is made of iron/steel which has been bronze patinated. It features a rider – ‘Toba’ riding a mule with GREAT detail throughout. The figure is holding a scroll in his left hand and gripping the reins with his right. Toba is wearing a circular bamboo hat with finial and wearing a floral decorated kimono. The mule, likewise, has GREAT detail with his long pointed ears, flowing mane and elaborate saddle and harness adorned with hanging ornaments. VERY IMPRESSIVE AND DECORATIVE PIECE ! Toba was a famous Chinese official, poet and calligrapher. Toba was removed from his post and sent into exile as a result of intrigues against him. The Showa era (??, Showa) refers to the period of Japanese history corresponding to the reign of Emperor Showa (Hirohito) from December 25, 1926, until his death on January 7, 1989.[1] It was preceded by the Taisho period. The pre-1945 and post-war Showa periods are almost completely different states: the pre-1945 Showa era (1926–1945) concerns the Empire of Japan, and post-1945 Showa era (1945–1989) is the State of Japan.
