Late 19th Century Set of Two Large Chinese Sancai Glaze Foo Dogs

About

Lovely set of two late 19th century colorful Chinese Sancai glaze foo dogs. Sancai (literally 'three colors') is a type of decoration on Chinese pottery using glazes or slip, predominantly in the three colors of brown (amber), green and a creamy off-white. The blues and blacks were used as well and the blue came from adding imported cobalt and was therefore more expensive and used sparingly. It is particularly associated with the Tang Dynasty and is commonly referred to as Chinese Tang Sancai. It uses earthenware and two firings are needed, it was easier and therefor cheaper to make than porcelain and very suitable for large figures.
