Life-Sized Shan Burmese Gilt Lacquer Papier Mâché Buddha, circa 1900
About the Item
A large and impressive Burmese papier mâché gilt lacquer figure of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, Shan States, Burma (now Myanmar) circa 1880 - 1900.
The Buddha sits in vajrasana upon a stepped platform, hands in bhumisparsha, one hand upturned in his lap, the other draped over his knee, long, slender fingers reaching down to touch the earth, symbolizing the moment of the Buddha's enlightenment.
The Buddha wears robes that cling tightly to his slender body, wrapping around and over one shoulder, his broad chest and wide shoulders partially exposed. A sash draped gracefully over the covered shoulder.
The Buddha wears a serene and benevolent expression upon his face, staring outwards through half-lidded eyes under high arched brows. A pronounced ushnisha, topped by a wooden lotus bud finial, crowns his head.
Crafted out of lacquered and gilt papier mâché, and completely hollow inside, the Buddha is deceptively light weight.
