Monumental Morung Carving with Leaf Muntjac and Four Mithun Head Decoration

About

Still one of the world’s most isolated societies, the Naga were once enthusiastic headhunters subjected to ‘civilizing missions’ by the British Empire throughout the 19th century. The Naga are talented artisans that create everything they need from the natural resources of their native land. This TOTEM depicts four mithun heads. It embodies the characteristics of the bull: Wide horns, long ears, a flat forehead and short snout. The bull heads are surmounted by a Leaf Muntjac (or Leaf Deer), which is a small rare deer unique to the dense jungle vegetation of the region. This piece is outfitted with a custom newly-made metal Stand and is for our "Journey to Nagaland" tribal artifacts exhibition May 20th-June 30th 2016. In a Naga village one structure eclipses all the others in size and importance. Standing over 30 feet tall and up to 50 feet long, the morung is a dormitory for young men. It serves as a critical institution dedicated to educating the village’s adolescent boys as they transition into adulthood. Every three years a new group is inducted each of which requires new carvings. They are placed at the entrance of the morung and the ornamentation on each TOTEM represents the group’s successes. The mithun bull, also known as a gayal (domesticated bison), Silhouette symbolizes wealth and is the most prominent form used in woodcarving.
