Pair of 19th Century Chinese Guardian Lions Wood Carvings from a Temple Wall

About

A pair of 18th or 19th century Chinese wooden carvings from a temple wall, depicting guardian lions. Born in Imperial China, each of this pair of temple carvings depicts a guardian lion boasting exquisite scrolled accents and a striking expression. Guardian lions were believed to have powerful mythic, protective benefits and often sat outside government buildings and temples. Each topped with a stylized bird, the lions are holding an intricate embroidered ball in their paws, which in imperial contexts, represents supremacy over the world. Flat on the back, this pair of Chinese 18th or 19th century carved wooden temple sculptures will be great decorative accents in any home.
