Pair of Chinese Buddhist Carved Stone Guardian Lions from the Ming Dynasty

About

A pair of Chinese Buddhist carved stone lions from the Ming dynasty. Sitting on their hind legs on a rectangular platform, the stylized lions are -hand-carved out of a rectangular block with a few anatomical details such as tail and paws. Each presents a similar face with large bulging eyes and a flat prominent snout above a large row of fangs, the lips drawn back in a grin. Decorative carvings adorn the cheeks and foreheads of these ancient guardian lions nicely weathered by the centuries, placed at the gateways of temples to ward off evil spirits. This 17th century pair of Chinese Buddhist carved stone lions could serve a similar purpose or just work as inspirational accent pieces in any home.
