Pair of Chinese Ming Dynasty Stucco Guardian Heads

About

A powerfully sculpted pair of Ming dynasty stucco heads of guardian figures, called lokapalas. These larger than life sized figures would originally have stood as guardians on either side of a doorway in front of a Buddhist temple. They portray the Buddhist deity Vajrapani, one of the major protectors of Buddhist teaching and law. Modeled in stucco, with exaggerated features and inset glass eyes, their faces contorted and fixed in a fearsome scowl. One with his mouth open, the other with his mouth closed, symbolizing the Sanskrit seed syllables "Om" and "Ah", something akin to the Greek "Alpha" and "Omega". These heads would originally would have been brightly painted. The paint is mostly gone from centuries of weathering, leaving behind the gesso, with some exposed areas of stucco. Mounted on custom black lacquered wooden stands. Height of heads only: 12.5".
