Shan Burmese Carved and Giltwood Standing Buddha, Early 20th Century

$6,500Asking Price

About

A powerful Shan Burmese standing Buddha of carved and gilt teak wood with shell inlaid eyes, early 20th century. The Buddha stands upright, dressed in a form fitting monastic robe tied at the waist, one shoulder exposed, with a sash thrown across the other shoulder. He holds a large covered jar close to his body with one hand, the other hand raised in abhaya mudra, the gesture of dispelling fear. The jar may symbolize either an alms bowl, or a medicine pot. The Buddha's heart-shaped face is serene and meditative. He looks out from downcast, shell inlaid eyes. His long earlobes nearly touching his shoulders. His tightly curled hair is arranged in neat rows of spikes, and is topped by a large ushnisha surmounted by a lotus bud finial. Carved from a single large piece of teakwood, and richly gilt, the lower part of the Buddha's legs have been ravaged by time, leaving him seemingly floating. Now mounted to a black wooden base.
