Small Thai Rattanakosin Gilt Bronze Buddha in Royal Attire, 19th Century

About

A small and very finely cast, lacquered and gilt bronze Thai Buddha dressed in royal attire, Rattanakosin Period (Rama III), Thailand, mid-19th century. Somewhat unusual in its iconography, this figure depicts the Bodhisattva Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future. The Buddha to Come is portrayed seated in virasana (half lotus position) upon a high stepped throne. He wears elaborate clothing fit for a ruler, as well as a crown upon his head, representing his dominion over the world. Maitreya's face is youthful and sweet. His eyes closed in patient meditation, a beatific smile upon his lips. His hair is arranged in the usual tight curls, however he does not have the ushnisha or flame finial that would identify him as the historical Buddha Shakyamuni. One hand is draped elegantly over his knee, the other hand held at navel level, and would originally have held a ritual fan. The back of the throne has two loops that would originally have supported a parasol. Both items now lost. The Buddha is well cast, with amazing detail to the robes and throne. The gilding somewhat worn in places, exposing the black lacquer beneath. The red lacquer visible on the un-gilt steps of the throne. A near identical figure is housed in the collection of the British Museum (1913,0513.1).
